Union Cabinet Approves Khelo Bharat Niti 2025: A New National Sports Policy

The Union Cabinet has recently approved the National Sports Policy 2025, now renamed as Khelo Bharat Niti 2025. The policy aims to strengthen India’s sports ecosystem in the midst of growing public interest and industry investment in sports.

With India’s sights on the 2036 Olympic Games, the policy proposes several ways to position the country as a sporting powerhouse. The Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 will also work towards widely cultivating a sports culture within the nation.

On the educational front, the policy emphasizes integrating sports and physical education into school curricula, making it a mandatory subject until the secondary level of school.

The policy also highlights sports as a tool for economic and social development. It encourages private sector engagement through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and supports the creation of a strong sports equipment manufacturing sector, which is crucial for economic growth.

On the innovation front, the document outlines plans to encourage growth in areas like digital technology, inclusive design, and affordable sports products. It proposes forming a Sports Business Advisory Group, bringing together representatives from relevant ministries, the private sector, and other stakeholders to support the growth of the sports economy.

In addition to infrastructure and training improvements, the policy outlines the role of sports in social inclusion. It aims to expand access and participation among women, economically weaker groups, tribal populations, and individuals with disabilities. Efforts will also be made to revive traditional and indigenous games and recognize sports as a viable career option, facilitating a dual-career path.

The policy envisions sports becoming a national movement as it aims to promote a fitness culture through nationwide campaigns and events. Initiatives like fitness indices for schools, colleges, and workplaces, along with better access to sports facilities, are included in the policy.
