Telangana is Ranked Second in Niti Aayog’s Innovation Index
Telangana ranked second overall in Niti Aayog’s India Innovation Index 2021 and topped the performers’ category. This index assesses subnational innovation capacities and ecosystems. To compare performance, states and union territories were divided into ‘17 Major States, 10 North East and Hill States, and 9 Union Territories and the City States’.
Telangana, a key IT location with several MNCs and startups, did well across indicators. Higher education enrollments (per lakh population) in the State increased from 9.7 to 15.7. Private R&D units (per lakh population) increased from 0.3 to 1.4. ICT labs in schools grew from 17 percent to 35 percent.
The State performed well in knowledge output pillars, including patents, trademarks, and industrial design, which saw an increase in units filed compared to last year. It also increased its start-ups from 4,900 to 9,000. The State was able to develop and utilize knowledge, but not in its products or services. The state must translate its expertise into products and services.
In this backdrop, KT Rama Rao, Telangana IT & Industries Minister commented, “Glad that the 3-I mantra; innovation, infrastructure & inclusive growth of
Telangana is paying rich dividends. Niti Aayog has ranked Telangana as No-1 in the performers’ category & overall as 2nd best in the country. Kudos to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for his visionary leadership.”
