Telangana Clears INR 19,579 Crore for Hyderabad Metro Phase 2B

The Telangana government has approved INR 19,579 crore for the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2B project. This investment aims to improve urban mobility in the city. The decision was announced recently as a joint venture between the state government and the central government, along with support from international funding agencies.
Of the total investment, Telangana will contribute INR 5,874 crore, which is 30 percent, while the central government will provide INR 3,524 crore, which stands at 18 percent. An additional 48 percent will be sourced as debt or loans from financial institutions such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Asian Development Bank (ADB), and New Development Bank (NDB). A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model will fund the remaining 4 percent, which is INR 783 crore.
A Revanth Reddy, Chief Minister, Government of Telangana, had earlier urged Narendra Modi, Prime Minister, Government of India, to approve the INR 24,269 crore project during the NITI Aayog meeting in May 2025. He emphasized the need for expansion, noting that new corridors have not been added in the last ten years. While Phase 1 covered 69 km at a cost of INR 22,000 crore, Phase 2 will span 76.4 km across five corridors.
The state submitted its proposal to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in November 2024 and has since responded to all queries. The chief minister requested swift cabinet approval, pointing out that cities like Chennai and Bengaluru have already received similar support.
