South Africa Strengthens India Travel Ties with Visa Reforms and MICE Expansion

South African Tourism, the tourism marketing arm of the South African Government, is set to enhance its ties with India through significant reforms in visa processes, business travel, and direct flight discussions. These developments will be highlighted at the India Roadshow 2025, taking place from March 18-20, 2025, in Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai.

The roadshow aims to boost tourism between the two nations by introducing streamlined visa policies, expanding MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, and exploring direct flights. South African Tourism sees India as a key market, given the 75,541 Indian visitors in 2024—a 79 percent recovery to pre-pandemic levels. The board now targets a 16 percent increase in 2025.

A major initiative is the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, designed to simplify visa applications for Indian tourists. Additionally, the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) will expedite group visa approvals, making travel more accessible. Talks are also underway to establish non-stop flights between India and South Africa, addressing long-standing connectivity challenges.

Business travel remains a crucial segment, with nearly half of Indian visitors in 2024 arriving for corporate events. The roadshow will promote South Africa as a prime MICE destination by strengthening corporate partnerships and highlighting its luxury venues and adventure retreats.

Beyond business, Indian travelers are drawn to South Africa for wildlife safaris, cultural experiences, and high-end resorts. The country’s landscapes, iconic attractions like Kruger National Park and Table Mountain, and its Bollywood connections further enhance its appeal.

With its upcoming G20 presidency, South Africa is focusing on easing travel, sustainability, and investment in tourism. These efforts, combined with strengthened trade ties with India, are set to drive a new phase of travel and economic collaboration in 2025.
