SEMICON India 2024 Highlights India's Semiconductor Potential

SEMICON India 2024 was held from September 11-13, 2024, at the India Exposition Mart Ltd (IEML), Greater Noida. Organized by SEMI in partnership with Messe München India Pvt Ltd, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), the event tackled key issues including talent shortages, supply chain redesign, and sustainability.

Inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Government of India, the event focused on the country’s growing importance in the global semiconductor landscape. During the event, SEMI launched its Workforce Development Program in collaboration with the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI) at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi). This program will work toward bridging the sector’s talent gap by developing specialized curricula and skill development initiatives.

The event showcased over 250 exhibitors, including major international associations and companies such as SEMI, NXP Semiconductors N V―a Dutch semiconductor manufacturer, Foxconn Precision Engineering Pvt Ltd, and Renesas Electronics Corporation―a Japanese semiconductor manufacturer. Exhibitors took the opportunity to showcase advancements in smart manufacturing, supply chain management, and workforce development.

Ajit Manocha, President and CEO, SEMI, the global semiconductor association, stressed the necessity of rapid growth for the country to secure a significant market share. He also addressed the anticipated shortage of 250,000 to 300,000 semiconductor professionals by 2027, drawing attention to the need for upskilling. Manocha noted that the association, in collaboration with Indian institutions, is dedicated to preparing the future workforce to meet this demand.

Akash Tripathi, CEO, ISM, expressed optimism that with strong government support and a growing talent pipeline, India is well-positioned to become a major player in the global semiconductor industry.
