RINL to Produce 55,000 Wheels for Indian Railways’ ‘Made in India’ Wheels Project
Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) is reportedly planning to manufacture 55,000 wheels this fiscal year as part of the Indian Railways’ ambitious goal to expand railway tracks, electrification, and station amenities. The plan calls for a major expenditure of INR 2.40 lakh crore to rebuild the Indian Railways. Visakhapatnam-based RINL, a state-owned company, has recently begun the construction of a forged wheel production plant in Lalganj, Uttar Pradesh. The facility, which is expected to cost between INR 2,000 and 3,000 billion, is expected to commence operations within the next few years.
RINL supplied over 2,465 loco wheels and 2,639 LHB wheels to Indian Railways in the previous fiscal year and has received a preliminary acceptance certificate for its plant. During the current fiscal year, wheel manufacturing is scheduled to increase to 55,000. This plan intends to minimize India’s dependency on imported steel and allow Indian Railways to use high-quality, ‘Made in India’ railway parts rather than imported ones. With the installation of additional facilities, RINL’s manufacturing capacity is predicted to possibly double to 2 lakh wheels per year, and the plant will be able to meet future demand for wheels in international markets.
