Bhopal, a city in Madhya Pradesh, is preparing to host its first international convention center by March 2026, indicating a major advancement in the state’s push to attract MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism.

Planned by Madhya Pradesh Tourism and budgeted at around INR 100 crore, the new facility will be built on land adjoining historic Minto Hall, now known as the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre. This initiative will address the current center’s limited capacity of 800 seats and the absence of lodging facilities, offering a more expansive venue for major events and conferences.

The new convention center will feature an auditorium with seating for over 2,000 people, as well as lodging, dining halls, restaurants, and business and media centers. It will include banquet halls, exhibition galleries, and other modern amenities essential for large-scale events. The project aligns with the National Strategy for MICE Industry launched by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, which seeks to position the country as a prime destination for corporate events and conventions.

Ilayaraja T, Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC), shared that the project funding is arranged under the Government of India’s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme. He mentioned that the proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, and is likely to receive clearance soon.

Prashant Baghel, Joint Director (Planning), Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, highlighted that this project would be the capital’s first and largest international convention center set within a heritage location. Built on the former site of the ‘Machhli Ghar’ aquarium, it aims to provide the infrastructure needed to attract high-profile national and international events to the city.
