The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) announced a major achievement in India’s electric vehicle (EV) journey—surpassing sales of EVs with over 1 million units sold in the financial year 2024-25. In line with the Prime Minister’s vision of Net Zero by 2070 and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, this milestone underscores the country’s significant move toward sustainable transportation and cleaner mobility, bolstered by respective supportive policies.

It also marks a vital turning point for India’s e-mobility sector, powered by technological developments and rising awareness about environmental protection. India’s ‘PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme’, which began in September 2024 under the INR 10,900 crore budget, to develop a robust EV ecosystem through domestic production, infrastructure expansion, and incentive programs.

The electric two-wheeler market achieved a 21 percent increase, selling 11.49 lakh units during FY 2024-25. Electric three-wheeler (e-3W) sales (L5 category) rose by an impressive 57 percent to 1.59 lakh units. More than 10 lakh electric two-wheelers (e-2W) and 1.22 lakh e-3W registrations occurred under the PM E-DRIVE scheme and appeared on the VAHAN portal.

HD Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of Steel & Heavy Industries, Govt of India, praised this achievement, deeming it as a clear indicator of India’s commitment to Net Zero 2070 goals.

Furthermore, the project has resulted in the savings of 15 crore liters of fuel, which translates to a 23 crore kg CO₂ reduction, thus reducing India’s carbon footprint. The Government is also advancing the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Auto Scheme, promoting local producers to innovate automotive technologies which will secure India’s automotive industry. With sustained focus, MHI’s vision is shaping India’s journey toward a greener, self-reliant mobility future.
