Lloyds Metals Marks World Environment Day with Bold Green Push

To mark World Environment Day 2025, Lloyds Metals and Energy Ltd, in partnership with the Lloyds Infinite Foundation, introduced a series of initiatives aimed at reinforcing its status as India’s foremost industrial sustainability pioneer.
Surjagarh Iron Ore Mine in Maharashtra is on its course to becoming India’s first certified ‘green mine’, showcasing the company’s efforts toward sustainable mining, green steel manufacturing, and community-led ecological transformation. The company has already eliminated 32,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, with expectations of it to rise to 50,000 tonnes with the integration of renewable energy.
Surjagarh Iron Ore Mine is undergoing extensive green transformations, such as the use of 100 percent electric drilling through the world’s first Electric Compressor Excavator Mounted Drill. It also includes the use of electric vehicles (EVs)—expected to cross 100 EVs by FY26—as well as the electrification of loading, hauling, and grading, and the use of LNG for ore transport. Lastly, MoUs have been signed with solar and wind energy partners, with supplies commencing from the second quarter of FY25.
B Prabhakaran, Managing Director, Lloyds Metals and Energy Ltd, noted, “Sustainability is an opportunity to transform the way core industries think, operate, and grow. Our efforts go far beyond compliance; we are building a replicable model of environmentally responsible mining, circular logistics, and inclusive development.”
The company also successfully laid and tested Maharashtra’s first 87-km iron ore slurry pipeline. The system reduces emissions by 55 percent—up to 61,000 tonnes annually—and reduces around INR 500–600 per tonne in freight costs, offering ecological and economic benefits.
The company is pioneering the beneficiation of Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) ore, historically treated as waste, with a 45 MTPA plant expected to be in its first phase by FY27. The company’s Mission Green initiative has led to the planting of over 3 lakh trees. Its Water Positive Operations and Rejuvenated Ecosystems operations include the rejuvenation of Hedri and Manger water bodies, increasing capacity by 1.45 lakh cubic mts.
Lloyds is also training youth through zero-emission, simulator-based welding programs and deploying renewable energy and circular economy practices across operations through its partnership.
