John Cockerill Joint Venture Boosts Indian Defence Sector

Belgium-based John Cockerill has partnered with Electro Pneumatics & Hydraulics (India) Pvt Ltd to expand into India’s defence sector. Recently, the two companies signed a joint venture (JV) agreement to manufacture turrets for the Indian Army’s Light Tank Program.
The partnership, structured as a 60:40 JV with John Cockerill Defense holding the majority stake, will produce turrets at Electro Pneumatics’ Chakan facility in Pune, Maharashtra. According to Francois Michel, Group CEO, John Cockerill, the venture may expand its product range based on market demand.
A statement from John Cockerill highlighted that the collaboration aims to combine the technological expertise, manufacturing capabilities, and innovation strengths of both firms to support India’s defence industry. The JV will leverage John Cockerill’s experience in advanced weapon systems and local industry knowledge of Electro Pneumatics & Hydraulics to deliver solutions tailored to the Indian armed forces.
John Cockerill has been exploring India’s defence manufacturing sector since last year. The company is already active in steel and green hydrogen projects in India, including a 2-gigawatt electrolyzer facility in partnership with Greenko Group.
