Interim Budget 2024 Charts a Green Path with Spiritual and Island Focus
In the Interim Budget 2024, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized a significant boost to spiritual and island tourism in India. She proposed increased infrastructure and connectivity for domestic tourism on islands, particularly highlighting Lakshadweep. Encouraging comprehensive development of iconic tourist centers, Sitharaman says that it is important to brand and market them globally, citing the success of destinations like Ayodhya after the inauguration of the Ram Temple. The budget also focuses on supporting tourism by promoting iconic spots and providing long-term interest-free loans to states for world-class facilities.
To enhance last-mile infrastructure, Sitharaman announced 517 new flying routes, with Lakshadweep positioned as a primary tourist destination. The budget’s impetus on tourism is expected to stimulate economic activity and benefit smaller cities and towns. However, experts highlight the need for emphasis on developing facilities like hotels. The budget allocates funds for improving airports, railways, and roads.
