India Plans to Launch Space Station with Robotic Operations
India is preparing to launch its space station by 2028, marking a significant leap in its space exploration capabilities. S Somanath, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), outlined that the initial phase of the ambitious project is set to commence within the next seven years.
According to Somanath, ISRO is currently in the design phase, aiming to have the first module of the space station ready by 2028. He emphasized that the detailed engineering designs capable of launching the LVM3 rocket are complete.
The early operations of the space station will focus on robotic activities, a critical step toward achieving human spaceflight capabilities by 2035. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of building operational confidence for sustained long-term missions.
When discussing global space efforts, he explained the country's cautious approach due to resource constraints, noting the need for parity to discuss participation in replacing the International Space Station (ISS). Amidst potential challenges with the ISS’s decommissioning, he affirmed the country’s commitment to advancing its independent space initiatives, including Gaganyaan, the country’s upcoming human spaceflight mission.
