Hindustan Zinc Deploys AI Surveillance to Boost Safety and Efficiency

Hindustan Zinc Ltd, India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, has deployed Detect AI, an advanced AI-powered surveillance system, across its operations to improve workplace safety, operational efficiency, and compliance monitoring.
Based on computer vision and machine learning, this system can detect hazardous industrial practices such as non-adherence to protective equipment guidelines, unauthorized personnel access, and work-at-height protocols. It uses real-time video analytics and cloud-based alerts to automate safety monitoring and eliminate manual intervention.
The AI solution integrates with IoT-enabled surveillance infrastructure that helps reduce human intervention by nearly 50 percent while improving operational efficiency by 20-30 percent across mining sites in Rajasthan, including Rampura Agucha, Sindesar Khurd, Rajpura Dariba, Zawar, and Kayad.
Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc Ltd, said, “At Hindustan Zinc, we have embedded technological excellence and automation into our operations to power ahead on the path of sustainable and responsible growth. Our vision is to eliminate manual intervention and automate our processes with advanced technologies such as AI/ML, IIoT, and computer vision.”
Apart from Detect AI, the company is leveraging emerging technologies such as drone technology, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR), and predictive analytics for process optimization, metal recovery, and sustainability, thus driving innovation in the Metals & Mining sector. The company has also established a first-of-its-kind digital collaboration center that analyzes data from all business units and provides real-time insights.
