Experts Call for Stronger Anti-Counterfeiting Measures at TAF 2025

Industry leaders at the 6th Traceability and Authentication Forum (TAF 2025) stressed the need for stricter anti-counterfeiting laws and advanced traceability technologies to safeguard India’s industries. Organized by the Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA), the two-day event brought together stakeholders to address the growing challenge of counterfeit goods affecting both domestic and international trade.
Experts pointed out that counterfeit products, fraudulent certifications, and mislabeled goods pose serious threats to consumer safety and India’s trade credibility. They emphasized the importance of real-time tracking systems, blockchain-enabled traceability, and AI-driven authentication tools. However, concerns were raised about ensuring accessibility to these technologies in rural areas, where traditional identification methods are still prevalent.
Abhishek Dev, Chairman, Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), recognized ASPA’s efforts in combating counterfeiting. He noted that the issue significantly impacts industries such as agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and FMCG, jeopardizing both consumer safety and India’s position in global trade.
Dev highlighted the importance of industry reports, such as the ASPA-CRISIL report from 2022, in understanding and addressing these challenges. He also stated that APEDA is committed to strengthening traceability for organic products through the integration of authentication tools like holograms and QR codes, aligning with the government’s vision of maintaining high product standards.
Manoj Kochar, President, Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA), emphasized the role of collaboration in tackling counterfeiting, stating that TAF 2025 had provided a platform for industry leaders and policymakers to work towards solutions that ensure consumer safety and fair trade. He also revealed that ASPA is set to release the State of Counterfeiting in India 2025 report, reinforcing the organization’s dedication to data-driven advocacy and industry-wide action.
The forum concluded with a strong push for policy reforms, stricter penalties, and global cooperation to curb counterfeiting. Over 200 participants, including government officials and industry leaders, pledged to advance authentication measures, urging policymakers to take decisive action to protect India’s markets.
