Diageo India Exceeds Water, Solar Goals
Diageo India (United Spirits Ltd) reported critical developments on its sustainability objectives, having achieved its water replenishment targets by 25 percent three years in advance, based on the company’s 2024 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Reporting Index.
The report, which highlighted positive progress in the ESG action plan of ‘Spirit of Progress’ initiative by Diageo, also noted a significant enhancement in the company’s solar energy capacity to 2.6 MW, along with climate resilience and community development efforts.
The report provides an overview of achievements in replenishing water throughout the water-stressed areas, with over a million cubic meters replenished in the last three years. De-silting dams and improving water access for local farming communities are some of the projects undertaken in partnership with Government and NGOs. Numerous sanitation and clean drinking water facilities have benefited many villages of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan.
To achieve its climate goals, Diageo India has stopped using coal, reduced direct emissions by 87 percent since 2020, and has adopted 98.6 percent renewable energy use in its direct operations. Furthermore, the company brand ‘Signature Packaged Drinking Water’ has undertaken a mangrove restoration project in Odisha, while its afforestation efforts in Rajasthan involved planting over two lakh trees.
Its long-term plans include further partnerships in sustainable agriculture besides a commitment towards 100 percent recyclable packaging by 2030, and this reflects Diageo’s mission to foster positive social and environmental change.
