BrahMos Facility Boosts India’s Defence Arsenal

The recent inauguration of the BrahMos missile production unit in Lucknow, India, stands as a significant step in strengthening India’s defence manufacturing. Built at a cost of INR 300 crore, the facility is part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor. The BrahMos facility, built in just over three years, sits on 80 hectares of land provided free by the state.
This new unit will manufacture the BrahMos, one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world, with a range of 290 km to 400 km and a maximum speed of 2.8 Mach (M). Developed by BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture, the missile features a ‘fire and forget’ mechanism that does not require further external intervention after launch. It can be launched from land, air, or sea platforms.
Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister, Government of Uttar Pradesh, attended the event in person, and Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister of India, participated virtually. Singh stated that such initiatives show India’s progress toward self-reliance in terms of defence. He described it as a turning point for indigenous defence production.
Alongside the production unit, the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility was launched to support the assembly and quality checks of the missile systems. Other key projects inaugurated include the Titanium and Super Alloys Materials Plant, which will produce advanced materials for defence and aerospace use, and the foundation stone for the Defence Testing Infrastructure System, which will aid in certifying military equipment.
