Apple’s Indian iPhone Exports Double Boosting Employment
In the 2023-24 fiscal year, Apple Inc’s iPhone shipments from India have surged to US$ 12.1 billion, a substantial leap from the previous period. This growth reflects the company’s expanding involvement in the Indian manufacturing sector. The tech giant is also increasing its recruitment efforts, aiming to employ half a million people through its vendors and component suppliers over the next three years.
The export volume of iPhones from the country has doubled, underlining the company’s strong foothold in the Indian market. This surge is credited to initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Program, which has facilitated the company’s expansion of its global supply chain.
Apple’s strategy to diversify manufacturing beyond China includes significant investments in India, where the company now manufactures 14 percent of its flagship products locally. The rise in iPhone production is supported by major Taiwanese manufacturers like Foxconn and Pegatron, showcasing India’s attractiveness as a manufacturing hub.
According to Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the country’s PLI scheme has been instrumental in attracting investments and boosting employment in the high-end phone manufacturing sector, signalling a positive trajectory for India’s electronics industry.
