ICAR-IVRI Leads Efforts to Enhance Livestock Management Across India
The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute at Izatnagar organized the ‘All India Directors Animal Husbandry Meet’, bringing together representatives from 28 states and 6 Union territories.
The inaugural session was graced by Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, who emphasized collaboration between state departments and universities to address specific needs. He advocated for the creation of an animal register to track livestock births and deaths and highlighted the importance of scientifically disposing of animal carcasses.
Dr Abhijit Mitra, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, DADH&F, and Dr Triveni Dutt, Director, ICAR-IVRI, also played key roles in the meeting. Dr Mitra called for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research and ethno-botanical remedies to minimize antibiotic use. He promoted novel vaccine development platforms and free-roaming animal action programs. State directors reviewed animal husbandry, disease diagnosis, and veterinarian capacity enhancement. The symposium stressed the necessity of addressing specific research requirements and advancing animal husbandry practices and research in India through collaboration.
