Amul to Set Up State-of-the-Art Milk Processing Plant in Telangana
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), the marketer of Amul, has chosen Vargal near Hyderabad to build a 5 lakh liters per day (LLPD) milk processing plant. The plant will be established through one of the 18 GCMMF member dairy unions, Sabarkantha District Cooperative Milk Union (Sabar Dairy). The procurement of milk will take place from the dairy producers in Telangana State. The proposed Amul plant will be located in a special food processing zone in the state. Sabar Dairy signed an INR 500-crore agreement with the Telangana Government in December 2021 to build the plant. The plant will employ about 500 people.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director, GCMMF, said during a panel discussion on Making Indian Dairy Industry Competitive at the Food Conclave 2023 held from April 28-29 at Hyderabad, that the state-of-the-art plant will process milk, ice cream, and other value-added products. Government support for dairy industry competitiveness, product innovation, and diversification to suit regional tastes were also discussed. Mehta stressed the relevance and viability of ‘One district One-product’ in the dairy space. In its operational area of Gujarat, Amul has tried dairy products with local-connect such as milk from indigenous Gir cow or Mehsani buffalo. The dairy business aims to develop a taste profile that will suit local consumption.
