Amazon Invests US$ 745M in Automation for European Operations
Amazon Inc is making significant investments in its European fulfillment center (FC) network, exceeding US$ 745 million to introduce state-of-the-art robotics and AI-powered innovations. This strategic move aims to enhance the retail experience for customers and create more job opportunities.
The e-commerce giant plans to roll out 120 new pieces of automation technology across its European network in 2024. By the end of the year, Amazon’s Innovation Lab will have installed more than 1,000 robotics and AI-powered solutions. The lab will also serve as a training center focusing on upskilling Amazon Robotics operators.
These advanced technologies, including item sorters, pallet movers, and automated guide vehicles, are designed to augment Amazon employees’ roles, leading to a more streamlined and efficient fulfillment process. The deployment of these technologies improves operational capabilities and contributes to a more safer working environment for employees, according to Stefano La Rovere, Director, Global Robotics, Amazon.
A notable innovation introduced to its in-store clothing offering in 2023 was the radiofrequency (RFID) technology tags, which enabled a smooth checkout-free shopping experience. Moreover, the company’s focus on AI-powered innovation has played a crucial role in its ability to deliver at unprecedented speeds to Prime members globally.
